“‘I have sworn not to be angry with you …. Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,’ says the LORD.”
Isaiah 54:9
God’s Word through the prophet Isaiah implied that His plan to redeem His chosen people was definite. With reference to their exile, God said, “In a surge of anger I hid my face from you for a moment, but with everlasting kindness I will have compassion on you” (v. 8).
How can God promise on oath not to be angry? None of us could ever do that! There must be a way that comes from within Him, from His love, His compassion. He must be able in and of Himself to forgive and renew. This is the hope we have! God made that promise with a full awareness of our sins against Him. Not everyone will believe, but any of us can.
Remember that these words come right after Isaiah 53, one of the clearest prophecies about our Lord Jesus’ sacrifice on our behalf. “He will bear their iniquities. … For he … made intercession for the transgressors” (53:11, 12b).
Have you taken courage in Christ? There is no other place for the foundation of your hope to be laid. Let the Lord’s everlasting kindness that leads to reconciliation move in your heart today.
