“When he was at table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight.”
Luke 24:30-31
Jesus had told His disciples clearly that His body would be broken for their sake, but they didn’t get it. Now, we find two disciples with broken hearts. They had hoped Jesus would be their Messiah, but He was dead and gone. They recount His crucifixion to a stranger who proceeds to rebuke them. Had they not read their Scriptures—all of which not only point forward to a Savior but to His suffering?
When they arrive in the town of Emmaus, they invite this stranger into their home. Then, something surprising happens: the guest makes Himself the host, breaks bread, blesses it, and disappears. And their eyes were opened! He broke the bread, and they saw the purpose of the broken body. They realized that their hearts were not only stirred up by thoughts of their Savior, but by the Savior Himself.
And, boy, did they run! They ran seven miles back to Jerusalem to tell everyone that Jesus Christ was risen from the grave. The Host became the meal so He would return triumphant from death as the ultimate Host and to invite His people to His feast.
