Deuteronomy 27:3
God doesn’t simply provide bread for His people—He desires for them dine with Him continually. This becomes a central promise that would guide God’s people through their many years in the wilderness. They would enter a promised land, a place characterized in sumptuous terms as “flowing with milk and honey.”
Think back to Eden—Adam and Eve feeding upon the plenteous fruits in the Garden of Eden while enjoying the presence of God and one another. Every heart carries this original hunger, and God is promising satisfaction in the Promised Land to His hungry and weary people.
But there is an ominous tone in the rest of Deuteronomy 27. For this Old Testament Promised Land is not heaven. God’s grumbling people must still contend with their own sin. If they give way to their sin, they will experience curses rather than blessing, exile rather than feeding in God’s presence. They would have to find their enjoyment in God’s feast rather than in the fleeting pleasures of sin. Still today the Lord beckons us (Revelation 3:20) to “come and dine”!
