“For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’”

Romans 8:15
The Spirit of God is called the Comforter because He reveals the everlasting love of the Father—the perfect love that casts out all fear— in the hearts of those who believe. He opened my heart to embrace that love even while I was shaking my fist at Him in a maximum-security prison. Imagine the comfort that flooded over me!

By nature, we’re all children of the devil (see Ephesians 2:1-3) with no right to God’s love. But by His death on the cross, Jesus set us free from our spiritual bondage (Hebrews 2:14.15). We who were once cut off have been brought into the family of God (Galatians 4:4.7). Understanding our desperation makes God’s rescue of us all the sweeter.

Adoption is one of the deepest mysteries of the gospel. Only Jesus, the eternally begotten Son of God, has a natural right to God’s love. But in Christ, God the Father has given everything to those who deserved nothing. I know exactly how that feels; I suspect you do, too. “Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ” (Romans 8:17).
