The Bible often uses the word walk not to refer to the physical act of moving your body by taking steps, but rather to refer to your mode of life. Take note of several examples:
“Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked” (Psalm 1:1). “Blessed are those who … walk in the light of your presence” (Psalm 89:15). “Let us walk in the light of the LORD” (Isaiah 2:5). “This is the way; walk in it” (Isaiah 30:21). “Ask where the good way is, and walk in it” (Jeremiah 6:16). “The LORD require[s] of you … To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8). “His command is that you walk in love” (2 John:6).
So when we come to the phrase “Even though I walk” in our beloved Psalm 23, we understand that David is speaking of our whole walk of life, a span of years that we will journey through, undoubtedly seeing joy as well as grief. As you go one step at a time on the paths the Lord has set out for you, don’t ever forget that you are not walking alone; your Shepherd Savior goes with you.
