“Do not lust in your heart after her beauty or let her captivate you with her eyes.”
Proverbs 6:25
Our distractions can be costly when they keep us from what is important and necessary. In this Luke 10 story, Martha is distressed, “worried and upset about many things.” Certainly, she loved her Lord and cared deeply about her family. But Jesus confronted her about all that kept her from focusing on Him.
Today I received a text from a wonderful friend who told how isolation, discouragement, and the network news were becoming distractions. What hinders you from keeping your eyes fixed on Jesus and your heart at rest in Him? Is it your cell phone? The internet? Your social media connections? Or maybe it’s your To Do list. Most of us encounter these things daily. Perhaps you feel convicted when Jesus points out that Mary is doing the better thing: sitting at His feet and listening to Him.
Face to face with Jesus, we are reminded, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27); “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you” (John 15:9). His Word abounds with promises given to us personally.
