“Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?”
Psalm 139:7
David as shepherd boy, giant slayer, warrior, and king knew life on many different levels. He also was a son, brother, husband, and father. Known too as the sweet singer of Israel, his ancient writings tell tales of victory and of failure and defeat. But only One knew all the secrets of his heart and life. “You have searched me and you know me” (v. 1). Whether in darkness or light, going out or lying down, on the mountain top or in the depth of hell, he found no place to hide. God was always there.
David also acknowledges in verses 14-17 that his Creator knew him when he was being formed in his Mother’s womb. God saw his future even before he came into being. Though too wondrous to fully comprehend, this was precious to David.
We take great comfort in these assurances: The existence of God and His availability to His created beings. His presence surrounds us. In the valley of the shadow of death, He is the only One who can be with us. We are never truly alone and can choose to live in the awareness of His constant care on life’s journey.
