“The master told his servant, ‘Go out to the roads and country lanes and make them come in …. I tell you, not one of those men who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.’”
Luke 14:23-24
Jesus continues the theme of meals by first reminding us not to invite for dinner only people who can repay us. Our repayment comes in glory. This humbles our tendency toward favoritism and also reminds us that we cannot repay the Host of hosts for inviting us to His feast.
Think about those you would normally invite to eat with you. Jesus tells a parable in which a master throws a great feast, but the expected guests bail out. They each have their excuses, all of which amount to “something more important came up.” In response, the master sends his servant out to round up every person—even and especially the very lowest—to come enjoy his banquet.
Thank God we are among the lowest! We are not too good or too important for the grace of God lavished upon us in Christ Jesus. We are the foremost of sinners (see 1 Timothy 1:15-16). He chose the last, weakest, and most foolish of us to enjoy a feast beyond our wildest dreams. Let’s celebrate and go out to the highways and hedges ourselves, because there’s always more room at His feast!
