“Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.”

Genesis 5:24
We often ignore the genealogies in Scripture, but we shouldn’t. The Lord recounts names for a reason. By them, He reminds us of His providential purposes. After Cain and the world with him continued to descend in Genesis 4, Seth was born and people began again to call on the name of the Lord. The whole of Genesis 5 is then spent remembering those who, like Enoch, walked with God.

At first glance, it just looks like a collection of names. But each name carries with it the reminder that the Lord will sustain His people and His promises through all ages. The world may not be very impressed, but for us, these names and the life these people found in the living God are testimonies to God’s faithfulness in all ages, including our own.

There is not a forgettable or insignificant age. Even as earthly circumstances tend to deteriorate around us, names are added to the Lamb’s book of life. Even as bad news accumulates, the good news goes forth. In all this, your name is precious in God’s sight because of the blood of the Lamb.
