“But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will tell you what is yet to come.”

John 16:13
Think about sheep in David’s day in Israel where quiet waters and green pastures are few and far between. The flock must get past the wilderness terrain and into areas of nourishment and drink, but finding that path on their own would be hopeless. “They need a shepherd to whom they can say, ‘I can’t see what you can see, but I trust you and I will follow you’” (Rory Shiner, 2022). This is what we are like—sheep needing a guide.

David often wrote in his psalms of waiting on the Lord to guide him to truth and understanding. “Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul” (Psalm 143:8). He knew God to be his Shepherd who would lead him. David’s familiar words in Psalm 23 of the Lord guiding him in paths of righteousness have been a stronghold for believers for centuries.

Jesus assured His disciples and us as well that guidance is readily available to all who are led by the Spirit. Intentionally stop and listen to the voice of the Spirit of Jesus. The answer may not come instantly, but you can trust Him to be your guide.
