“Whatever is has already been, and what will be has been before; and God will call the past to account.”
Ecclesiastes 3:15
We read on in Ecclesiastes 3 and find that we bump up against our limits—we cannot always see or understand the intricate and wondrous workings of our all-powerful God.
What we observe over the years is that life is cyclical. History repeats itself. Nothing ever stays the same, yet it keeps coming around again. In the patterns of repeating events, God does what we can’t do. He seeks what has been driven away, calling “the past to account.” The words there imply searching after something that’s lost, perhaps like a shepherd going after a lost lamb.
As time goes on, there is much that you and I can’t remember, isn’t there? Our memories fade; our mental acuity slips. God sees our past, present, and future events. He’s concerned with bringing what has been lost or hidden to account for the purpose of making things right and bringing order. Someday He will corral those lost things, and you and I might see their meaning. Even if we don’t, God sees. And He cares.
Your heavenly Father is working it all for your redemption and for your good.
