“I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit ..., he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.”
Psalm 40:1-2
Are you resting in the Psalm 23 phrase, “I shall not be in want”? Are you waiting patiently for the Lord, as Psalm 40 tells us? When I do not keep these words in the forefront, my mind wanders to worries and wants: loved ones in great need for which I want to see answers to their circumstances, devastating news around the world for which I want provision and justice, and so on. Peace and contentment quickly fade.
David wrote the words of Psalm 23, but he surely would have been in want as he was stalked by enemies, felt hunger and exhaustion, and was forced to hide in caves to preserve his life. His family troubles were diverse and abundant, much of it due to his own sin. Yet he looked to his God, determined to overcome.
The word “shall” seems to indicate a decision of the will. Whatever circumstances in your life are spinning out of control, whatever “slimy pit” you’re in, know that there is a God, and He can be trusted. His power enables you to stand firm and see His goodness. As His love pours in, our hearts are filled, and we are satisfied.
