“There is no fear in love. But perfect love casts out fear.”

1 John 4:18a
Watching the nightly news is a daily reminder of the ever-present evil of this world and can strike fear in the heart. Places that were once known to be safe environments are now often the sites of violence and death. Safety is uncertain as the daily routines of life are carried out. Do we just close our eyes to reality, lock our doors, and hide in our homes? That would be understandable!

This world has always been filled with evil and causes for fear. The journey of Jesus on His way to the cross would strike terror in His disciples and great agony in His own heart. The Romans guarding the city streets had the power to put anyone to death. After Jesus’ crucifixion, some of His disciples would be banished or killed.

But we who know Jesus can choose another alternative by resting in the providential care of our loving God. It is not our love that is perfect, but the perfect love of God for His children. The ultimate sacrifice of Jesus demonstrated that love. Kneeling at the foot of the cross places us forever in the care of our Shepherd.
