“This grace … has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.”

2 Timothy 1:9-10
Jesus was born in Bethlehem that first Christmas as an infant, not because babies make holidays more fun, or because religion makes births more significant. Our need was not lack of cuteness or meaning. Jesus came to save our lives! Many see life as hopeless, meaningless, and filled with struggle. But our problem is even worse than that: it all ends in death. The playing ground is leveled as we realize that death is truly our common denominator. When you come right up against the death of a family member or friend, you know how horrible and tragic it is. We are weak and simply powerless to avoid it.

Praise God for Jesus who is the Savior we need. He is not merely a wise moral teacher, an excellent role model, or a friend to the poor and needy (though He is all of these). He alone died and rose again, conquering sin and death. He alone can offer us life and immortality.

The angel’s announcement is our invitation, too, because our need is as great as the shepherds’. Will you welcome the Christ child as your Savior?
