Over the last several months I’ve had the privilege of getting to know Matthew, a brother in Christ who previously was incarcerated for 15 years. He “succeeded” dramatically after his release but was miserable. It dawned on him that he had sought God for benefits of the good life, without really knowing God Himself. Now he ministers alongside me weekly at Pleasant Valley State Prison in Coalinga, California, radiant in his love of God for all that He is.
The Prophet Haggai was sent to those who had returned to the Promised Land after exile. They had put off the rebuilding of God’s house for 16 years. Some had returned with earthly, longed-for benefits—rather than the Lord—at the center of their purpose.
When earthly success is the only objective of our “Christian” walk, God Himself is not on the throne of our lives. Only in knowing Him personally is there joy in this life and hope in the next. The people in Haggai’s story repented and clung to God’s Word: “I am with you …. My Spirit remains among you” (2:4-5). We cling to it too!
