“So in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.”

Romans 12:5
On most sportfishing boats, there will be fishermen who are “regulars.” They recurrently spend good money to fish with a particular captain and crew. But occasionally, the captain will bring on a personal friend as a guest. This is quite a fortunate position to be in, as the friend rides for free without working or paying. Unfortunately, they can be a hindrance. They sometimes get in the way and even cause problems with the paying customers. There’s a term for these fishermen: “deadheads.”

Paul reminds us that the Lord does not save us to be mere spectators in the mission of His church. We’re not to be “deadheads” who are along for the ride and contribute nothing. We have been placed in a position of honor and privilege as God’s people, and He has given us talents that are to be used for His work and His glory.

In whatever way the Lord has gifted you, use your abilities for the benefit of others, not for your own benefit. Since God has given you the gift of salvation, use the spiritual gifts He has cultivated in you for the good of others.
