Ecclesiastes 7:2b
According to an old saying, only two things in life are certain: death and taxes. A person might find his way around taxes, but no one can escape death. Though it’s a topic many people prefer to avoid, Solomon writes plainly about death in the book of Ecclesiastes. He advises us to think about it while we are in the land of the living. David reminds us in Psalm 23 that we are living under the shadow of death. In other words, it is a coming reality.
Despite these ancient words, it is difficult not to be grieved, shocked, or perhaps even outraged when death takes a loved one. When the news reports thousands dead from war, natural disaster, terrorism, or disease, we ache in our hearts for such devastating losses.
Paul’s letter to the believers at Corinth brings us a broader perspective about death. It is inevitable, but there is hope of a coming resurrection. Jesus faced death and conquered it by rising from the dead. His death means we will live in eternity with Him when this life is over. The shadow will give way to everlasting light!
