“He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, … saying, ‘This is my body given for you ….’ In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood.’”

I don’t know about you, but even after knowing Jesus so long, I sometimes still grow sad when I reach this part. Jesus Himself agonized over what was ahead. But this is how it was to unfold. This is how we get to feast with God as we were meant to do from the beginning. It would be the last supper before Jesus took that lonely walk to the cross, a meal we’d commemorate for the rest of time.
And it is here that He breaks the news with the breaking of the bread: He is not only the guest and the host—He also is the meal. When He declared Himself to be the Bread of Life, it would be a broken body that would feed us. When He showed Himself to be the Water of Life, it would be His blood that would nourish us. His bread would be of the will of God; His cup would be that of God’s wrath. And it would have to be that way for us to feast with God.
May we never approach the Lord’s Supper lightly. It’s there that we internalize this truth: to feast with Jesus, we must feed upon Jesus. To know Him as our host, we must know Him as our sacrifice.
