“And Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, because he always ate at the king’s table, and he was crippled in both feet.”

2 Samuel 9:13
While our world is often powered by prestige and wealth, now and then we hear of someone important who reaches down into the real-life levels of society to provide for one who is unable to provide for himself. Such beautiful acts of kindness are truly an echo of what Jesus has done for us.

In this Bible story, David and his close friend Jonathan (son of King Saul who sought to kill David!) had a bond of friendship and commitment to each other and their families. While Jonathan and Saul died at the battle of Jezreel, Jonathan’s son Mephibosheth lived. But as he fled with his nurse for their lives, Mephibosheth fell and became crippled (see 2 Samuel 4:4). David, in an act of godly sensitivity, asks, “Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness” (9:1)?

David had experienced God’s grace in his own life. He knew that mirroring such compassion would begin the healing process of uniting Judah and Israel. The personal, one-on-one care that David gave is a picture of God’s tender care for us.
