Of all the ways to describe our God, aren’t you glad that He is the “God of all comfort”? In Psalm 23 David says the rod and staff bring him comfort. It is, I believe, comfort in the sense of security. When we know we are protected by the One who cares for us so deeply that He would lay down His life for us, a calm confidence results.
Israel had often strayed from the righteous path, going after false gods or following their own desires and lusts. There were even false shepherds who led them astray. But judges, priests, and prophets were raised up to pull them back from places of danger and destruction.
Jesus revealed Himself as the Good Shepherd, promising protection from the wolf that wants to attack the flock and scatter it. Attacks come in many forms. Our own foolish choices may have led to places of extreme danger. It is in those times when we most need to hear the voice of our Shepherd, Jesus. God in His mercy wants to rescue and restore and pour on the healing balm of His Spirit as He offers comfort to His own dear children.
