“‘Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed’, says the LORD, who has compassion on you.”

Isaiah 54:10
I recall a season in my life when I was suffering through a great deal of loss and heartbreak. My marriage was experiencing difficulty, largely through my own stubbornness, and I had a hard time understanding how God was working in the midst of it all. While I knew it was right that He was disciplining me, I couldn’t see that anything good was coming out of it. I spent quite a bit of time in the mountains during that period. There I found much-needed hours alone with the Lord, and it was during those hikes that He straightened out the hard edges of my heart.

Have there been times when you needed to quiet yourself before the Lord? Today’s key verse is meant to be a comfort not only to God’s people corporately, but also to each one of us individually. The prophet Isaiah reminds God’s people that though they are being disciplined for their sins, God’s faithful love for them is ever-present.

Even if the mountains and creation itself were demolished, the compassion God has for us as His children would never change.
