In prison there is perhaps no greater joy than receiving a visit. Those hours spent with family or friends in the Visitation Area (even separated by wire or Plexiglas!) are like sweet morsels of freedom to be savored long after returning to your cellblock.
While I never had an “official” personal visit during my time in prison, there were many times Christians came to the prison to be an encouragement to many of us who were entirely alone. I was always humbled by the spiritual love that kept them coming back weekly to those who had been forgotten by the rest of the world.
Jesus says that visiting those in prison is a way of demonstrating our love for Him. This is because Jesus Himself visits prisoners. He visits them in the preaching of His Word. He visits them by the heart-changing power of His Holy Spirit. He visits them through letters and books sent through the mail, unhindered by brick walls and razor wire.
Believing prisoners are members of the body of Christ (see Hebrews 13:3). They are your brothers and sisters in the Lord.
