Having spent my life on the East Coast, I am well acquainted with the seasons. By Christmastime the trees are bare, and the ground is frozen and seems forlorn. Perennials are dormant. There is little evidence of life to be seen. Yet I am confident that come springtime, green things will begin sprouting again.
The writer of Hebrews declares that faith is being sure of what we do not see. Instead of being overcome with doubt and despair, we can find hope when our faith is dormant. Some have called these seasons “the dark night of the soul.” You may know what it is like to struggle and feel as if the Lord is absent. God’s Holy Word tells us He never leaves us or forsakes us. Nature gives us a reminder of that promise: hope is not lost; life will spring forth again.
The Lord does not condemn us when our faith is weak or dormant. Even some of Jesus’ disciples doubted while they stood right there in front of their risen Savior (see Matthew 28:17). Jesus breaks through with love and assurance for all who call upon His name.
