In his day, King Solomon was the wisest man on the face of the earth. His personal wealth and the prosperity of his kingdom were known far and wide. Surely you and I would be content if we had his wealth and success. Yet we read his words, “‘Meaningless! Meaningless!’ says the Teacher. ‘Everything is meaningless!’” (Ecclesiastes 12:8)
Ecclesiastes is a book of wisdom, the tormented reflections of a deeply frustrated teacher. Solomon is widely believed to be its author, and the tragedy of his life is transparent throughout. Despite all he had, Solomon’s lust for the things of this world eventually lured his heart away from God. He learned the hard way that, in the end, all this world has to offer is vain and meaningless. He concluded that it is best to joyfully accept whatever God provides, to be content, and to focus your affections on Him.
This is why Jesus said in John 15, “Remain in me and I will remain in you…. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete” (v. 4, 11).
