One of the joys of my life is to set a beautiful table and welcome family or friends to come and enjoy what has been especially prepared for them. I learned this firsthand in my growing up years, and I continue to carry on the tradition. When those shared times around the table were paused because of the pandemic, I saw how important that mealtime connectedness was to me.
Jesus prepared a table, so to speak, on the beach for His disciples. Just picture it: the fire is warm and glowing, and the coals are ready to cook the freshly-caught fish. There is bread in which to wrap the grilled fish. I imagine their cloaks spread on the ground so they could recline comfortably there.
Although we cannot experience exactly what the disciples did that morning, we can gather around the table on Sundays and partake of the Lord’s Supper. Jesus meets us there as we hear His words, “Take and eat; this is my body. … Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins” (Matthew 26:26-28).
